The Sc 296a Deep Red-Brown and Black MN OG stamp with a PSE certificate, one of the most desired US inverted stamps was sold on eBay few days ago. The slightly uncentered, but still desired US rarity. The stamp was sold for US $43,451.00, 14 bids from 4 bidders were made.
Fewer than 97 copies are known, almost all have disturbed gum.
Three of the denominations, 1 cent, 2 cents and 4 cents, were printed in sheets on which the center vignette was inverted relative to the frame. The inverts carry the Scott catalog numbers 294a, 295a, and 296a respectively. The one cent inverted stamp is more common than the others stamps from that set, the catalog value of a set of all three inverts is estimated at $100,000. The 4 cent inverted stamp never went on sale, while the 1 cent and 2 cent inverts were sent to post offices accidentally.
